How Much Does Cabinet Refacing Cost in Port St. Lucie, FL Compared to Replacement?
Written by Nick Iarriccio, licensed Florida general contractor (CGC1529124) and founder of Elite Home Improvements Group, based on kitchens refaced and replaced across the Treasure Coast.
Cabinet refacing in Port St. Lucie typically costs $4,000 to $12,000 in 2026, while replacing kitchen cabinets runs $7,000 to $14,000 for stock or ready-to-assemble cabinets, $12,000 to $25,000 for semi-custom, and $25,000 to $45,000 or more for fully custom cabinetry. Most Treasure Coast homeowners who reface spend $6,000 to $9,000. Most who replace spend $12,000 to $20,000 once the old cabinets are out and the new ones are installed.
Refacing is usually a third to a half of what replacement costs for the same kitchen, and it is the right answer more often than people expect. It is also the wrong answer more often than the refacing companies will tell you. Below are the real local numbers for both, side by side, what moves each one, and the Florida-specific conditions that decide which your kitchen actually needs, from a licensed contractor who does both.
- Cabinet refacing in Port St. Lucie costs $4,000 to $12,000 in 2026; most homeowners spend $6,000 to $9,000.
- Replacing cabinets costs $7,000 to $14,000 for stock or RTA, $12,000 to $25,000 semi-custom, and $25,000 to $45,000+ custom.
- Refacing is typically 30 to 50 percent of the cost of replacing the same kitchen and takes 3 to 7 days instead of 3 to 8 weeks.
- Reface only if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and dry. Humidity-swollen particleboard and under-sink water damage are the two things that rule it out in Florida.
- Replacement is the only option when you are changing the layout, moving the sink, or adding an island, because the boxes come out anyway.
- Ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets are the biggest replacement cost lever, often bringing a new-cabinet kitchen close to a premium refacing budget.
Refacing vs Replacement Side by Side for a Port St. Lucie Kitchen
Here is the direct comparison for a typical 25 to 30 linear foot Port St. Lucie kitchen, the size of most homes built in St. Lucie West, Tradition, and the older neighborhoods east of US-1 from the 1980s through the 2000s.
The countertop line is the one people miss. Refacing leaves your counters in place. Replacement almost always means new countertops too, which adds $3,000 to $8,000 for quartz or granite on a kitchen this size, and that number belongs in any honest replacement budget. See our countertops and backsplashes page for what that work involves.
Cabinet Refacing Cost by Material and Tier
| Refacing Tier | Typical Cost (2026) | What It Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Laminate or Thermofoil (RTF) | $4,000 to $6,500 | New laminate or rigid thermofoil doors and drawer fronts, matching veneer on boxes, new hinges and pulls. Lowest cost; least heat and moisture tolerance. |
| Wood Veneer | $6,000 to $9,500 | Real wood veneer doors and face frames in maple, oak, or cherry, stained or painted, soft-close hinges, new hardware. The most common Treasure Coast refacing job. |
| Solid Wood Doors | $9,000 to $12,000+ | Solid wood doors and drawer fronts, full veneer on every exposed surface, soft-close hardware, optional new drawer boxes and roll-out trays. Lasts as long as the boxes do. |
Pricing runs $120 to $170 per door locally and $130 to $400 per linear foot depending on material, which is why a 20-door galley and a 40-door kitchen with an island land in very different places. Labor is roughly half of any refacing bill. The doors are made to measure, so the money is in the measuring, fitting, and finishing, not the parts.
Door style and finish are the two choices that set the refacing price, and they are easier to make in person than from a sample chip. We keep full-size door samples in a range of styles and finishes at our showroom so you can hold the actual door against your kitchen's color before you commit to a tier.
Kitchen Cabinet Replacement Cost in Port St. Lucie by Tier
| Replacement Tier | Typical Cost (2026) | What It Includes |
|---|---|---|
| Stock or Ready-to-Assemble (RTA) | $7,000 to $14,000 | Standard sizes, plywood or furniture-grade box options, limited door styles and finishes, delivery and professional install. Fast and the best value for a standard layout. |
| Semi-Custom | $12,000 to $25,000 | Built to order from a manufacturer with modified sizes, more finishes, and organizers. The most common replacement tier here. |
| Fully Custom | $25,000 to $45,000+ | Built to the inch for your kitchen with any wood, finish, or configuration, including true inset doors and specialty storage. 6 to 12 week lead times. |
These ranges are installed cabinets only. Demolition, disposal, and the countertop, plumbing, and electrical work that comes with a new layout are what turn a cabinet replacement into a full kitchen remodel, and that is a different budget.
Why RTA Cabinets Change the Replacement Math
Ready-to-assemble cabinets are the reason the stock tier starts at $7,000 instead of $12,000. The boxes ship flat, are assembled on site, and skip the manufacturer markup on labor, which cuts material cost 30 to 50 percent against semi-custom without cutting the quality of the box. For a standard-layout Port St. Lucie kitchen with sound walls and no sink move, RTA replacement frequently lands within a few thousand dollars of a premium wood refacing job, with brand new boxes instead of 30-year-old ones. We stock RTA cabinet lines you can open and close in our Port St. Lucie showroom before you decide.
Request a Free Cabinet EstimateWhy Florida Kitchens Fail the Refacing Test More Often
Refacing works when the boxes are sound. The problem is that Treasure Coast kitchens fail that test more often than kitchens in a dry climate, and a refacing company whose only product is refacing is not motivated to tell you. Here is what we check before recommending either option.
Humidity-Swollen Particleboard Boxes
Most kitchens built in Port St. Lucie in the 1980s and 1990s were fitted with particleboard boxes. Thirty years of 70 to 80 percent humidity, plus every summer the air conditioning cycled off while the house was empty, leaves many of them swollen at the edges, soft at the bottom, and pulling away from the wall. New doors on a box like that is new paint on a rusted car. If a screwdriver sinks into the toe kick or the shelf pins have wallowed out, refacing is money spent twice.
Water Damage Under the Sink
Every Treasure Coast home sits on a slab, so plumbing leaks show up inside the sink base, not in a basement. A slow drip at the supply valve or disposal for a few years delaminates the base cabinet floor and often the one next to it. It is one of the most common things we find in kitchens over 20 years old. A single damaged base can sometimes be rebuilt and the rest refaced; a run of them means replacement.
Peeling Thermofoil from the Last Remodel
A lot of kitchens here were already refaced once, in the 2000s, with rigid thermofoil doors. Florida heat and the steam off a dishwasher or range cause the foil to lift at the corners, which is usually why a homeowner is calling us. Refacing a second time is fine if the boxes behind those doors held up. The doors failing is not the same as the boxes failing, and we check before we quote.
Condo and HOA Rules Favor Refacing
In the condo buildings on Hutchinson Island and along the river, refacing rarely needs association approval because nothing structural, plumbing, or electrical changes, and the work is done in days with no dumpster. Full replacement with a layout change usually does need approval and a licensed contractor on file. If you are in a condo, that approval timeline belongs in the replacement column. Our guide to condo association approval walks through what buildings typically require.
Cabinet Refacing Cost Across the Treasure Coast: Stuart, Fort Pierce, and the Island
Labor and material rates are the same from Fort Pierce to Hobe Sound, so the number does not change by city. What changes is the housing stock, and that changes which option the kitchen needs.
Mostly 1990s and 2000s production homes with particleboard or thermofoil cabinets from the original builder. Boxes are often still sound. These are the best refacing candidates in the county, and the most common refacing job we do.
Older and higher-end stock, with more solid wood kitchens that reface beautifully, and more layout changes requested, which pushes toward replacement. Our Stuart remodeling page covers what we do there.
The oldest kitchens in our service area, many never updated. Boxes frequently fail the moisture test, and RTA replacement is usually the better dollar. See our Fort Pierce remodeling page.
Salt air, smaller galley kitchens, and association rules. Refacing is fast, needs no dumpster, and rarely needs approval. Our Hutchinson Island condo page covers the building side.
We measure and quote the same way in all of them, and the estimate is free anywhere on the Treasure Coast.
What Affects Your Cabinet Refacing or Replacement Cost
Five things move the number more than anything else, on both sides of the table:
- Door count and linear footage. Both refacing and replacement are priced by how much cabinet there is. An island, a pantry wall, and a bank of uppers to the ceiling all add doors.
- Material. Laminate to wood veneer to solid wood roughly doubles a refacing price. Particleboard to plywood to all-wood boxes does the same for replacement.
- Hardware and interiors. Soft-close hinges, new drawer boxes, roll-out trays, and lazy susans add $50 to $300 per cabinet on either path and are the upgrade people are happiest with.
- Layout changes. Any sink move, island, or wall opening removes refacing from the table and adds plumbing, electrical, and a permit to replacement.
- Countertops. Refacing keeps them. Replacement nearly always means new ones. Budget for them or plan to reuse only if the new boxes match the old footprint exactly.
Is Cabinet Refacing Worth It on the Treasure Coast?
For a kitchen with sound boxes and a layout you like, yes, and the resale data agrees. The 2025 Cost vs. Value Report found a minor kitchen remodel, the category refacing falls under, returned more than 100 percent of its cost at resale nationally, while a major upscale kitchen remodel returned under 40 percent. Buyers in Port St. Lucie and Stuart respond to a kitchen that looks new. They do not pay extra for the plywood behind the doors.
Refacing is not worth it when the boxes are failing, when you are selling a house where the kitchen layout is the objection, or when you are already replacing the countertops and flooring, because at that point the cabinets are the only old thing left in a new kitchen. In those cases an RTA or semi-custom replacement is the better dollar.
The honest version: a refacing franchise will tell you to reface, and a cabinet store will tell you to replace. We do both under one license, so the recommendation is based on your boxes, not on our inventory. See how we reface and replace cabinets.
Frequently Asked Questions About Cabinet Refacing Cost in Port St. Lucie
How much does it cost to reface kitchen cabinets in Port St. Lucie?
Cabinet refacing in Port St. Lucie costs $4,000 to $12,000 in 2026, with most homeowners spending $6,000 to $9,000 for wood veneer doors and drawer fronts on a 25 to 30 linear foot kitchen. Laminate refacing starts around $4,000; solid wood doors with new drawer boxes reach $12,000 or more.
How much does it cost to replace kitchen cabinets in Port St. Lucie?
Replacing kitchen cabinets costs $7,000 to $14,000 for stock or ready-to-assemble cabinets installed, $12,000 to $25,000 for semi-custom, and $25,000 to $45,000 or more for fully custom cabinetry. Add $3,000 to $8,000 if the countertops are replaced at the same time, which they usually are.
Is it cheaper to reface or replace cabinets?
Refacing is cheaper, usually 30 to 50 percent of the cost of replacing the same kitchen, because the boxes stay, the countertops stay, and the work takes days instead of weeks. The gap narrows with ready-to-assemble cabinets, which can bring a new-cabinet kitchen within a few thousand dollars of a premium refacing job.
How do I know if my cabinets can be refaced?
Your cabinets can be refaced if the boxes are square, dry, solidly attached to the wall, and free of swelling or delamination. Press a screwdriver into the toe kick and the sink base floor; if it sinks in, the particleboard has taken on moisture and the box should be replaced. We check every box before quoting.
How long does cabinet refacing take compared to replacement?
Refacing a typical Port St. Lucie kitchen takes three to seven days, and you can use the kitchen most of that time. Replacement takes three to eight weeks once ordering is included, with one to three weeks of no usable kitchen during demolition and installation.
Do I need a permit to reface or replace cabinets in Florida?
Refacing does not require a permit because nothing structural, plumbing, or electrical changes. Replacing cabinets in the same layout usually does not either. Moving the sink, adding an island with power, or opening a wall does require a permit in St. Lucie and Martin counties, and the contractor pulling it must be licensed.
How long does cabinet refacing last in Florida's humidity?
Quality wood veneer or solid wood refacing lasts 10 to 20 years or more in Florida when the boxes underneath are sound and the kitchen is air conditioned year round. Laminate and thermofoil doors are shorter lived here because heat and steam lift the foil, which is the most common reason we are called to reface a kitchen a second time.
Does cabinet refacing cost more in Stuart or Fort Pierce than in Port St. Lucie?
No. Refacing and replacement are priced by door count, linear footage, and material, and those rates are the same across St. Lucie and Martin counties. A 30 linear foot kitchen costs the same to reface in Stuart, Fort Pierce, Jensen Beach, or St. Lucie West. What differs is the age of the cabinets, which decides whether refacing is an option at all.
Can I reface cabinets in a condo without association approval?
In most Treasure Coast condo buildings, refacing does not require association approval because it is cosmetic, takes days, and involves no plumbing, electrical, or structural work. Full replacement with a layout change usually does. Check your building's alteration policy, and we can supply the license and insurance documents most associations request.
